I am here, in my house. All dressed and ready for school. The newsman chattering away in the living room, as my mother sips her coffee and watches the news.
My little sister, Katie, comes jauntily skipping out of the bathroom in her red pocket filled raincoat, and her shiny blue boots. Her hair in neat braids. She sits down at the table and begins eating her breakfast.
The rain patters on my roof, drizzling down the windows. My cat snuggles down deep into our sheepskin couch cover, and drifts off to sleep. My dogs stand attentively by the window, watching my horses trot around the corral.
I walk over to my charging table and grab my iPad and slide it down into my backpack and zip it up. I put my hair into a tight side braid and set my coat and backpack on the coffee table as I slip on my sneakers.
When I am finally ready, I take one last look out my window.
The aspen trees with fiery leaves waving in the mist, popping out with color against the blandness of the rain. The fog swirling around my barn. I smile and swing my bag over my shoulder and leave. The mist surrounds me and I can see my breath disappearing into the wind. I shiver and leave for school, dreading my classes, and excited to come home so I can cherish the rain once more.
